Abstract

717.274. Frictional shock-absorbers. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. May 2, 1952 [May 5, 1951], No. 11213/52. Class 108(3) [Also in Group XXI] In a friction shock-absorber comprising rings 19, and segmental friction rings 20 which bear against the bore of a tube 12 rigid with one of the parts between which shock is applied, the rings 19, 20 are mounted between compression rings 22, 23, and springs 24, 25, the outer end of which are in abutment with axiallyadjustable seatings 26 on the other part, the travel of the rings 22, 23, in a direction towards the centre of the longitudinal axis of the rings 19, 20 being limited by stops on the other part. These stops are formed by the ends of a tube 18 carried by a red 15 rigid with the other rigid part. In the static position of the shock absorber (shown), there is a clearance between the ring 22 and the lower end of the tube 18. Each seating 26 bears on a respective key 27 which itself bears on a rod 28 adjustably threaded in the rod 15. The spring 25 is stronger than the spring 24. In operation, on downward movement of the tube 12 relative to the tube 15, the rings 20 are picked up and carried downwardly leaving the ring 23 abutting the tube 18. When the friction force acting between the tube 12 and the rings 20 becomes less than the force exerted by the spring 24, the rings 19, 20 slip back into engagement with the ring 23. A constant friction force, equal to the load of the spring 24, is thus maintained. Similarly in the other direction of relative movement, a constant friction force equal to the load of the spring 25, is maintained between the rings 20 and the tube 12. As shown in Fig. 2, the shock absorber may be mounted between a slide member 10 and a cradle 7 of a gun, Fig. 1 (not shown). Recoil is met by a spring 9, and forward movement is buffered by plate springs 11.
