Abstract

717,140. Socks. TENOVA, Ltd. Feb. 27, 1953, No. 5571/53. Class 141 [Also in Group VIII] A self - supporting sock of the kind having an elastic garter band at its upper edge and with the normal calf portion cut away is characterized in that the garter band is free to stretch evenly and to a substantial extent over its whole circumference relatively to the knitted upper portion of the sock. As shown the garter band 22 is attached to the upper section 1 of the sock by lock stitching 25, the upwardly convergent edges of the section 1 forming the marginal edges 6 of the cut-out. The unstretched length of the elastic band which is attached to the upper edge of the section 1 is less than the length of such edge to allow stretching in wear. In a modification, the upper section of a seamless sock has an integrally knitted elastic portion of substantially less diameter than the remainder of the section. The cut-out is formed, in this case, by the removal of some of the sock material with the aid of a template.
