Abstract
A resin suitable for use in coating compositions is made by heating together an adduct from 1 mol of a rosin acid material and 0.46-0.86 mols of an alpha-beta-unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride with an amount of pentaerythritol monomer or a mixture of pentaerythritol monomer and up to 80 per cent. of pentaerythritol polymer sufficient for complete esterification of the acid components, until the product has an acid number which is low enough to provide an ester of substantial clarity but is not below a certain value as determined from a graph. Reaction may be performed in presence of an esterification catalyst, e.g. calcium acetate, zinc oxide and lithium carbonate, cadmium acetate, litharge or lead acetate. Specified rosin acid materials are wood and gum rosin, abietic, l-pimaric, d-pimaric and sapinic acids; hydrogenated, dehydrogenated, disproportionated and heat-treated rosin; and tall oil resin acids. Specified unsaturated polycarboxylic acids are maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citraconic acids or anhydrides. The resins yield varnishes, thinnable with mineral spirits, when cooked with oils, e.g. raw or bodied oils, or maleic or cyclopentadiene treated soft oils. Specified oils are safflower, soyabean, fish, linseed and dehydrated castor. Examples are given in which adducts of wood rosin and maleic anhydride are heated with pentaerythritol and the products cooked with soyabean oil. U.S.A.
