Abstract

717,120. Making cartons; packaging. JAGENBERG-WERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 7, 1950 [Dec. 10, 1949; Dec. 10, 1949], No. 29966/50. Classes 18 and 94 (1) [Also in Group XXX] A machine for making cartons from flat cardboard tubes and separate top and bottom closure members includes means for opening and refolding the tubes and feeding them to an endless conveyer, on which the bottom closure members are secured to the tubes, and means for receiving a top closure to the cartons after these have been filled. In one embodiment, the tubes 1 are turned to fold flat on the opposite diagonal to that on which they are folded as supplied to the hopper 2, and are injected by rollers 3 into alternate forms 4 on a conveyer 6, into which they open out by their natural resilience. A bottom member 10 supplied from a hopper 11 is placed on each tube and both are passed through a heating chamber 12 where adhesive on the member 10 is rendered active for the securing of this member to the tube under a press 13. The open ended cartons leave the conveyer at 14 to be severed (to bring the open end upwards) and filled by a machine 15. A conveyer 16 receives the filled cartons and they are deposited in the alternate forms 5 of the conveyer 6. They are capped with a top closure member 19, passed through the heating chamber 12 and the closure 19 secured under a press 21. The cartons leave the machine by a delivery conveyer formed by part of the conveyer 16. In an alternative form (not shown) two such machines may operate together, the conveyer 6 of one receiving two tubes for each movement and the one securing the bottom closures, while the other secures the top closures after the cartons have been reversed and filled. The apparatus for re-folding the tubes as delivered from the hopper 2 by a pusher 24, Fig. 4, comprises, in one embodiment, rollers 25 forwarding each tube between suction cups 28, 29 which open the tube sufficiently for entry of blades 30, pivoting about vertically reciprocating rods 35. The blades 30 turn through 180 degrees to open the tube and close it on the other diagonal and the re-folded tube is passed by the rollers 3 to the conveyer 6.
