Abstract

Commercially purified acrylonitrile is treated to render the same colour-stable by a process which comprises adding water thereto until the water content is between 0.3 and 3 per cent by weight. Samples of fresh, commercially purified acrylonitrile and the same containing from 0.5 to 3 per cent of water are stored in glass containers in diffuse daylight at room temperature and the intensities of the colours developed are determined by means of a spectrophotometer. Numbers corresponding to the intensities of the colours are set forth in Tables I-IV.
