Abstract

A fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids, each acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the chain and the fatty acid or fatty acid mixture having an iodine value of less than 70, or one or more esters of said fatty acid or fatty acid mixture is reacted with at least 20 per cent by weight, based on the fatty acid of a phosphorus sulphide at a temperature of not less than 250 DEG F. for a time sufficient to form a sulphur-containing reaction product and a phosphorus-containing sludge. Phosphorus pentasulphide or sesquisulphide may be used. Specified fatty acids include stearic, palmitic and myristic acids; oleic acid may be mixed with other acids provided the iodine value of the mixture is less than 70. Esters such as fats, e.g. tallow fatty oils, lanoline and degras (wool fat) may be reacted with the phosphorus sulphide. Preferably the reaction is carried out between 300 DEG and 325 DEG F. for 1/2 to 1 hour. 20 to 35 per cent of phosphorus pentasulphide by weight, based on the fatty acid is preferred. The reaction product may be used as an additive in lubricating compositions (see Group III). In an example, lauric acid is reacted with phosphorus pentasulphide at 300 DEG F. for about an hour and the phosphorus-containing sludge allowed to settle and the reaction product decanted off.ALSO:An additive prepared (see Group IV (b)) by heating a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids, each acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the chain and the fatty acid or fatty acid mixture having an iodine value of less than 70, or one or more esters of said fatty acid or fatty acid mixture, with at least 20 per cent. by weight based on the acid of a phosphorus sulphide at a temperature of not less than 250 DEG F. for a time sufficient to form a sulphur-containing reaction product and a phosphorus-containing sludge, is mixed with mineral lubricating oils and greases. The fatty acids specified include stearic acid, palmitic acid and myristic acids. Oleic acid may be mixed with other acids provided the iodine value of the mixture is less than 70. Esters such as fats, e.g. tallow fatty oils lanoline and degras (wool fat) may be reacted with the phosphorus sulphide. If desired the reaction product may be reacted with a base forming a salt and these salts are included in the scope of the term "additive." Suitable bases specified include ammonia, oxides or hydroxides of tin, lead, aluminium, potassium, calcium and barium, amines and heterocyclic nitrogen bases such as diamylamine, monoamylamine, butylamine, triamylamine, octylamine, tributylamine, dicyclohexylamine, dimethylamine, dipropylamine, quinoline, quinaldine, pyridine, brucine and quinine. Suitable lubricating oils are those of viscosity 40-3000 s.u.s. at 100 DEG F., and up to 50 per cent., preferably from 0.01 to 10 per cent., of the additive may be used.
