Abstract
716,904. Tension apparatus. VARCO, S. March 27, 1952 [Sept. 11, 1951], No. 7869/52. Class 81(2) A pelvic traction belt comprises an abdominal band to be tightened round the waist and of such width as to overlie the pelvic crests and the lower vertebrae, a pair of traction straps each having two branches connected to the band so as to be positioned at the front and back of the pelvic crests when the belt is worn, a pair of tension transmitting straps secured to the band and extending angularly from the lower edge thereof towards the upper edge of the band to the lumbar region thereof, the branch of each traction strap which is at the back when the belt is worn being connected to the tension transmitting straps, each branch of the traction strap converging from its point of connection to an apex which is below the thigh of the patient, an extension strap being connected to the apex of each traction strap and extending below the foot of the patient when the leg is straight. The belt 11, Fig. 4, is provided with straps 22, 27 buckles 23 and a hook 25 for securing the belt at the front. Elastic gussets 21 are provided which in wear are disposed at the sides of the body. The belt is reinforced at the back and front by webbing strips 32, 31 stitched to it. Tension-transmitting straps of webbing are stitched near the upper edge 13 of the belt on each side of the gussets 21 to form loops 39, 42, 45, 46 which terminate level with the lower edge 14 of the belt. Traction straps 51, 52 of webbing have their free ends buckled to the loops 39, 42, 45, 46 taken in pairs on each side of a gusset 21, each strap 51, 52 being folded on itself to form an apex extending below the 'thighs of the patient. Extension straps 54, 55 are secured to each apex by a slip ring 53, each extension strap extending beyond the feet of the patient and being fastened at its free end to a spreader bar 56, Fig. 1. Soft material e.g. flannel is stitched to the belt 11 to form a lining. A pulley 79 is carried by a column 77, Fig. 3, slidably mounted in a cross-bar 76 between two uprights 73, 74 which are hooked to the bed rail 75. A cord 62 knotted to the spreader bar 56 passes over the pulley. 79 and has weights 81 applied to its free end. When the apparatus is being used the foot of the bed is raised.
