Class 98(1) [Also in Groups XVI and XIX] In an apparatus for winding flexible strip material, e.g. winding film in a photographic camera, particularly where an exposed part of the film is to be cut off, a cam is fixed to a driven spindle within a relatively rotatable cylindrical shell around which the material is wound, such that the leading end of the strip material may be fed through a slot in the shell periphery, the shell being held against rotation by resilient means until the strip is gripped between the cam and shell interior. As applied to a recording instrument of the kind wherein a paper strip 7, Fig. 1, is fed from a roll across a viewing apparatus where it is marked by a reciprocating marker 14 which thus produces a graphical record 15 of a variable factor on the moving strip, the end of the strip 7 is fed from a spool (not shown), by a shaft 10 bearing teeth at its ends. A spindle 18 is driven by a pulley 19. band 28, and pulley 27 on the shaft 10 in a manner permitting slip of the spindle 18, relatively to the shaft 10 which is driven by an electric motor through a speed reduction gear. The spindle 18 carries a cam 20, Fig. 9, having a small clearance between its periphery and the inside of a shell 21 rotatably mounted on the spindle 18, The end of the strip is fed along guide channels 5 and 6, Fig. 1, formed at the edges of a guide plate 1, such that the strip end enters a slot 22, Fig. 9, in the shell 21 and curls around the cam 20. the shell being held by studs 31 engaging an L-shaped plate 29 against rotation, until the shell is rotated due to locking action of the strip between the cam 20 and shell 21. Thus, the strip is wound upon the shell 21. The wound roll may be removed by reversely rotating the pulley 19 relatively to the shell 21. thus releasing the strip end, and then sliding the roll axially off the shell 21, an end slot 23 registering with the slot 22 being provided iri the shell 21 for this purpose. The cam shape may be modified, as shown in Fig. 10, especially for the purpose of securing strips of varying thicknesses by providing arcuate surfaces 32b.
