Abstract
854,069. Magnetic recording and reproducing machines. INGLESBY, J. C. V. (Fries, G.). April 5, 1957 [April 12, 1956], No. 11197/56. Class 40 (2). A magnetic tape - recording apparatus for obtaining highscanning speeds with comparatively low tape transport speed. A cylinder 2 (Fig. 1), supported on a shaft 13 contains feed and take-up spools 15 and 16 coaxial with the drum. A magnetic tape wound on the feed spool passes out through an aperture 4 in the cylindrical surface of the drum, passes completely round the drum on a helical path for a distance of not less than 360 degrees and re-enters the drum through an aperture 5 to reach the take-up spool. A stationary magnetic head 9 scans the tape as the complete drum rotates, so that the scanning speed is proportional to the angular speed of the drum. The magnetic track of width tn (Fig. 4), is at an angle to the side of the tape and passes over the edges of the adjoining sections of the tape between apertures 4 and 5. At each revolution of the drum the tape must be advanced a distance not less than ts in order to present a fresh surface to the head 9 for the next track. The distance ts =tn/cos # where is the helix angle of the tape path around the surface of the drum, determined by the ratio of the circumferential length of the drum to the width of the tape. In a modification the spools are mounted outside the drum to enable larger spools to be used. In a further modification the tape has perforations along one edge cooperating with a toothed roller and in this case the drum is a conic frustum. Specifications 739,809 and 788,862 are referred to.
