Abstract

The balance testing arrangement described in Specification 642,916 is modified in that the two pick-offs are directly connected to respective coils of a dual wattmeter, the combined torque produced by these coils being opposed by the combined torque produced by a further pair of coils fed through potentiometers from either phase of the two phase generator driven synchronously with the shaft under test, the potentiometers being adjusted as in Specification 642,916 so that out-of-balance measurements made in respect of one preselected " correcting " plane are independent of any out-of-balance in the second " correcting " plane. As shown, the outputs of the pick-offs 6, 6a, associated with the respective bearings 2, 2a of the test shaft 1, feed, directly, the aiding coils 7, 7a, of a wattmeter 9. The wattmeter coils 8, 8a, which oppose the coils 7, 7a are adapted by means of reversing switches 10, 11, 13, 13a to be fed from either phase of the two phase generator 5 driven with the shaft 1, the currents in the two coils 8, 8a being adjustable, relatively, by potentiometers 12, 12a. To set the apparatus, a dynamically balanced standard shaft is used with an unbalance mass placed at one end, e.g. the right hand end thereof in the preselected "correction plane." With the switches positioned as shown, the potentiometer 12 is adjusted until zero reading is obtained on the wattmeter; this adjustment precludes an unbalance in the right hand "correction plane " affecting a reading of an unbalance in the left hand "correction plane." The potentiometer 12a is similarly adjusted to preclude unbalance in the left hand "correction plane affecting unbalance readings in the right hand "correction plane," by replacing the unbalance mass at the left hand end of the standard shaft and moving switches 10, 11 to their other positions. Unbalance measurements may now be effected as described in Specification 642,916.
