Abstract

715,583. Control of A.C. motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 14, 1953 [Aug. 27, 1952], No. 21573/52. Class 38(3) [Also in Group XXXV] In a control system for a hoist driven by a wound rotor induction motor 10 the rectified output of a tachometer generator 15 and a reference voltage from a hoist-position-operated potentiometer 19 are applied differentially to the control windings 18a, 18b of magnetic amplifier energizing a torque motor 21 controlling a hydraulic rotor-resistanceactuator 25. Negative overspeed error signals of sufficient amplitude cause the torque motor to operate dynamic-braking-contacts EB1 applying D.C. to the stator from sources 12. 13. (Source 12 is a constant voltage D.C.; the voltage of source 13 varies with the speed of the motor). STARTING HOISTING Assuming the previous wind to have been in the reverse direction, start button SB energizes (i) contactor F over winder-operated limit-switches LSF, LSB and (ii) relay A which applies a small positive voltage from potentiometer 19 to magnetic amplifier control winding 18b; this causes a reduction in rotor resistance until the motor load current operates relay LC to release the mechanical brakes. As the motor speeds up contacts SS are opened to release relay A thereby connecting the slider of potentiometer 19 to the control winding 18b. and hoisting proceeds according to a set programme. DYNAMIC BRAKING. When the speed error becomes negative, contacts EB1, 2 are operated to energize the braking contactor B; de-energize the motor contactor F, (or R); and energize relay G to reverse the connections to the magnetic amplifier, so that rotor resistance control is in the correct sense for braking. LIMITING CIRCUITS. (i) [The emergency stop]. The emergency stop is initiated by a voltage sensitive relay 37 in series with a rectifier 38 across the control windings 18a. b. (ii) Acceleration (or deceleration) is limited by a solenoid 30 restricting the outlet of the hydraulic actuator 25. and energized through a magnetic amplifier 27 controlled by a differentiating network 28, 29 fed from the tachometer generator 15. (iii) Overload current relays CL and BCL responsive to motoring and braking currents energize a solenoid 33 to restrict the actuator outlet.
