Abstract

791,076. Automatic speed control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 16, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 16209/54. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] A winding motor 1 has its rotor resistance 2 controlled by means of a pilot motor 3 supplied from an amplidyne 4, a field winding 5 of which is energized in accordance with the speed of the winding motor. For this purpose, a reversing contactor 23 connects a fixed voltage source through resistor 24 to two paralleled branch circuits, one comprising resistor 25 and field winding 5, and the other comprising a variable resistor 27 as well as a tachometer generator 29 driven by the winding motor. An additional' field winding 6 on the amplidyne is opposed to the winding 5 to produce a torque-limiting effect on the winding motor, the winding 6' being supplied from a magnetic amplifier 7 through a reversing contactor 32. The control coil 8 of the amplifier is excited in proportion to the stator current of the motor 1 through a current transformer 12 and a rectifier 12a, the output terminals of the rectifier being shunted' by a variable resistor 14 and fixed resistor 13. A rectifier 10 and reference voltage source 9 are connected in series with the coil 8. When the winding motor is stalled, the resistor 14 is adjusted to provide the required starting torque after the brake has been removed. The removal of the brake short-circuits the section 14, the fixed section 13' remaining in circuit so that the torque is limited to a different value after the winding motor has been started. A single lever may be used to adjust both the resistances T4 and 27, so that, on starting the lever is set to provide the torque necessary to start the load, and, on release of the brakes, the lever is moved' to the required speed position.
