Class 64(3) A recuperative heat-exchanger for the exchange of heat between two fluid media one of which is noxious or poisonous comprises two chambers or passages through which the respective media flow, separated by a double wall 7, 8 confining an isolating interspace 10, and heat conducting means in the form of metal pins 11 or like solid elements extending across said interspace and into each said chambers. The space 10 may be entirely open, as shown, or may be enclosed and maintained at a pressure below that of the chamber containing the poisonous gas. Poisonous or noxious gases which may be. used as heating media are exhaust gas from a vehicle engine, heated air from an air-cooled engine, or vaporized sulphur or gases and vapours formed in connection with the manufacture of sulphite or sulphate cellulose. The heated medium is preferably air. The apparatus may be used in connection with the heating of factories, halls, buses, cars and like spaces. The heat transfer elements which may comprise alternatively sheet iron plates or strips or metal wire, may be coated with suitable heat-resistant or otherwise more tenable material.
