Abstract

Spoilage by enzyme action of food and other organic produce, e.g. meats, vegetables, fruits, fruit juices and pulps, animal and vegetable fats and oils, eggs, milk products, grain, cereal flour, flowers, bulbs and alfalfa, is prevented by treatment with the gas obtained by burning a hydrocarbon-containing fuel gas with an amount of air substantially less than that required for complete combustion, which gas has a free oxygen content of not more than 0.05 per cent by volume. The gas contains, for example, water vapour, 9.2 per cent of carbon dioxide, 3.2 per cent of carbon monoxide, 0.1 per cent of acetylene, 0.1 per cent of olefines, 0.6 per cent of paraffins, 1.6 per cent of hydrogen, 0.0 per cent of free oxygen, 1.0 per cent of argon, and 84.2 per cent of nitrogen.
