Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXIII] In a heat-insulating structure consisting of an evacuated casing formed of sheet steel plates 1 and 2 welded together at their edges 4 and containing a compressed filling of glass fibre, rock wool or quartz, or slag fibre 3 which supports the plates against collapse due to atmospheric pressure, the filling is preformed by compressing a batt of the fibre at a pressure of at least one atmosphere, whilst heating it to a temperature lying above the strain point of the fibrous material but below the point at which it softens, so that when the pressure is removed, the batt substantially retains its compressed form. To ensure the minimum thermal conductivity of the batt, the fibres therein are oriented in planes extending parallel to the walls 1 and 2 of the casing, for example, by the method described in Specification 715,174.
