Abstract
715,174. Heat insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 14, 1952 [July 14, 1951], No. 17719/52. Class 64(2) [Also in Group XI] In a thermal insulating structure such as a panel for the construction of refrigerator cabinets or the ovens of cooking ranges, a body 4 of filler material is located between the flexible walls 9, 10 of a sealed container and the space between the walls is evacuated, e.g. to a pressure less than 100 microns mercury, so that a pressure of one atmosphere is exerted by the walls on the body 4. Moreover, the body 4 consists of filaments 16, Fig. 5, 'of hard material, such as glass or quartz, lying in parallel planes extending in the general direction of the walls, the filaments being randomly oriented in the planes as indicated to. provide long and tortuous heat-conduction paths 22 between the walls. One wall 10 of the panel may be corrugated, Fig. 3, or inclined to the other, Fig. 4, and in the latter case the body 4 of filaments is in graded blocks, the edge of the panel being sealed by a poorconducting breaker strip 14; the remaining spaces between the bodies 4 and the walls 10 are filled with the same or unspecified insulation 11. The walls may be flat and parallel, one or both being of low carbon steel, and one wall may be of stainless steel, in which case the edges of the walls are welded together or the edges may be joined by a corrugated, stainless steel, breaker strip. The body 4 may be of glass filaments having a tensile strength of at least 105 x 10<SP>5</SP> gms./sq. cm., their diameters not exceeding 2.5 x 10-<SP>3</SP> cm., and the density of the body is 0.15-0.4 gms./c.c. or more. The thermal conductivity of the solid material of the filaments should be less than 3.5 x 10<SP>-3</SP>cal./cm.-‹C.-sec. which is stated to give a conductivity for a body 4 of filaments in vacuum of 6-10 x 10<SP>-6</SP> cal./cm.-‹C-sec.; filaments of glass having a Young's modulus of elasticity of at least 492 x 10<SP>6</SP> gms./sq. cm. are referred to in this respect. The body 4 may be precompressed or compressed between the walls by atmospheric pressure after assembly. During evacuation of the panel, it is baked to 450‹C to remove occluded gases.
