Class 97(1) [Also in Group XXXVIII] A longitudinal wall divides the casing of sound film apparatus into two compartments, comprising a smaller one containing film feeding means, sound head, viewfinder and a reflector behind the gate opposite a closable aperture in the side wall and a larger one containing a flywheel for the sound head, an amplifier and a motor which drives a longitudinal shaft which in turn drives the film feed mechanism and the shutter. As shown, the casing 1 is divided by a wall 2 behind which the film path is situated. In front is a motor 10 which drives a shaft 7 through a belt 9. The shaft drives, through worm gearing 13. 14 a shaft 15 on which is mounted, behind the wall 2, a sprocket which feeds the film to and from the gate. The other end of the shaft carries shutters 125, 126. one carried directly on the shaft, which is hollow, and the other by another shaft within. A collar 19 carrying a pin projecting into oppositely inclined helical slots in the two shafts is axially adjustable by an arm 23 actuated by an external knob to produce relative rotation of the shutters and vary their opening. This end of the shaft 7 also drives the claw feed comprising a claw frame 25 reciprocated in pins 27; in the feed direction, by an eccentric on the shaft and rotated about the pins by a face cam 28. A lens turret 41 carries objectives and lenses for the viewfinder, the sight tube of which passes through the upper part of the film compartment. The latter compartment also contains a sound head the drum of which is carried on the shaft 44 which extends through the partition wall to the front of the compartment shown where the flywheel 43 is carried. The compartment shown also contains the amplifier 12. The apparatus may be used for recording sound or silent films, for printing sound tracks, in which case two films are fed in register round the sound head, or for projecting or printing picture films. In the latter purposes a lamp housing is added. For printing light is directed through the objective. for projection it is directed through the side wall aperture on to the reflector behind the gate.
