Abstract

714,268. Poultry battery feeders. SHEPHERD & SONS, Ltd., J., and SHEPHERD, R. April 1, 1952 [Nov. 5, 1951], No. 25786/51. Class 5 (2) In poultry battery-cages, the feeding and drinking troughs are carried by a reciprocating trolley driven by a continuously-operating non-reversing chain or like means. The connection between the chain and the trolley permits a pause at the end of each traverse during which pause the drive is transferred to the other run of the chain for trolley travel in the opposite direction. Pins 31, 27 at opposite ends of a telescopic arm 28, 29 connect the chain 17 to a rhomboidal slotted plate 26 slidable in guides 25 secured to the trolley 12. At the end of its traverse, the trolley 12 is stopped by brackets 32. The arm 28, 31 is then fully extended and the slide 26, owing to its shape, clutched in the guides 25. Stopping of the trolley releases the slide 26 which travels on, while the arm 28, 29 pivots about the pin 27 and the pin 31 moves round to the other side of the sprocket 19. The pin 27 then moves to the other end of its slot and the return movement of the trolley begins. Connected to the trolley through a cable and pulley system 34, 34a-34h are scrapers each arranged to travel over the base 35, preferably of glass, below the reticulated floor of each row of cages. When the trolley reaches one end of its travel, it rocks an arm 41 connected to a tiltably-mounted tank 38 filled from a constantlyrunning tap. The water is thus tipped into an outer tank 39 from which pipes 40 discharge into the drinking troughs 14 on the trolley.
