Abstract
714,127. Switching systems for resistance welders. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Aug. 20, 1952, No. 20906/52. Class 38(4) A circuit for supplying a load, such as a resistance welding transformer 9, with a half-cycle or part thereof of an alternating current supply at each time of operation of the circuit, comprises a valve 1 in series with the load and normally held non-conducting by A.C. bias 18, the valve being caused to conduct for half a cycle (or less) when desired by a triggering voltage pulse developed across a resistor 25 consequent upon conduction of a thyratron 19 when a switch 24 in the anode circuit of the last is closed. The precise point in the A.C. cycle at which the thyratron (and consequently the valve 1) fires is determined by a phaseshift circuit 32, 34 feeding the primary winding of a transformer 28 which continuously supplies firing pulses to the control grid of the thyratron. A valve 2 may be arranged to trail 1 so that the load receives a second half-cycle of opposite polarity to the first. By replacing the single thyratron by a system of, say, N discharge paths (which may be in a common envelope) and causing in succession each of the discharge paths to change from a state of non-conductivity to one of conduction the valve 1 may be caused to conduct N times for each closure of the switch 24. A hard valve oscillator, normally biased back so as not to oscillate, but triggered off by the peaking transformer 28, may replace the thyratron 19.
