Abstract
A protective layer is formed on a reflecting metal surface formed on a thermosetting layer of lacquer which has been hardened by heating, by covering the metal surface with a layer of a thermosetting lacquer which is subsequently hardened at a temperature at least 15 DEG C. lower than that at which the supporting layer of lacquer was hardened. A preferred reflecting surface is a layer of aluminium applied to the supporting layer of lacquer by vaporization in a vacuum. Preferably the same lacquer is used for supporting and protecting the metal surface; a specified lacquer is a mixture of a urea formaldehyde condensation product and a non-drying alkyd resin, this mixture being applied to the metal layer as a solution in xylol-butanol. The coating may be applied to the reflecting surface, which is subsequently rotated rapidly, or it may be sprayed thereon. In an example, provided on a plate having a part-spherical surface, the supporting lacquer is muffled at 150 DEG C. and the aluminium mirror supported on this is coated with a solution of "Paralac (Registered Trade Mark) 6001," a urea formaldehyde condensation product, and "Sigmol 706," a non-drying alkyd resin, in a xylol-butanol mixture having a viscosity 9 to 9.5 degrees Engler at 20 DEG C. by application of a small quantity of the solution to the mirror with subsequent rapid rotation of the latter. The coating is then dried at 60 DEG C. for 20 minutes and then muffled at 115 DEG C. for more than 1 1/2 hours.
