Abstract

713,785. Vapour burners. KEAST, F. H., and WILLIAMS, F. D. M. Jan. 4, 1952 [Jan. 6, 1951], No. 333/52. Class 75 (1) A liquid fuel vaporizer particularly for use in a combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine comprises at least one vaporizer tube 18 disposed in an air stream within a combustion chamber 10 and having an open inlet end 19 facing the air stream and provided with inlet means for liquid fuel, a terminal portion 18e connecting with a centrally disposed outlet 25 facing upstream and providing a flame zone having a central region of maximum temperature surrounded by an outer region, substantially all the vaporizing tube not including the portion 18e being disposed in said outer region, the portion 18e extending for a substantial distance transversely across said central region of the flame zone so that fuel passing therethrough is vaporized, and an intermediate portion 18c extending upstream toward the portion 18e so that fuel and air flowing in the tube 18 are directed by centrifugal force mainly upon the generally upstream side of the portion 18e before reaching the outlet 25. The end portions 18e of a plurality of tubes 18 are directed non-radially into the outlet 25 so that the fuel is swirled in the latter. The vaporizer is disposed downstream of a baffle 15 having openings 15a through which air passes to cool the divergent inlet portions of the tubes 18 which are axially aligned with the openings 15a. The said divergent inlet portions are extended and curved to form U-shaped bends 18a, 18b, 18c adjacent and parallel to the wall of the flame tube 14 disposed within the combustion chamber 10. Specification 713,744 is referred to.
