Abstract

A composition comprises choline chloride and an amount of choline phosphate sufficient to inhibit discoloration of the composition in contact with ferrous metals. There is described the preparation of a solution of the salts in the ratio 99-60 mols. of choline chloride to 1-40 mols. of choline phosphate calculated as the monophosphate by the treatment of an aqueous solution of choline with sufficient phosphoric and hydrochloric acid to provide pH 5.0-6.8 and then adjusting the pH to 7-8 by addition of sodium bicarbonate or carbonate.ALSO:A composition comprising choline chloride and an amount of choline phosphate sufficient to inhibit discoloration of the composition in contact with ferrous metals is incorporated into animal feed in quantity sufficient to provide 0.05-4 per cent of choline. A preparation which contains the salts in the ratio of 99-60 mols of choline chloride to 1-40 mols of choline monophosphate is obtained by treatment of an aqueous solution of choline with phosphoric and hydrochloric acids to produce pH 5.0-6.8, adjusting the solution to pH 7-8 by addition of sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, and concentrating at 40-65 DEG C. in vacuo to 70 per cent choline solids. An example is concerned with prevention of perosis in chicks by incorporation of such a preparation into a choline-free diet, the composition of which is set forth in detail.
