Abstract

713,600. Bowl-type earth scrapers. EUCLID ROAD MACHINERY CO. July 30, 1952 [May 14, 1952], No. 19272/52. Class 68(1) In a bowl-type earth scraper, the separate mechanisms for raising and lowering the bowl, the apron, and the ejector are so designed that the power units 50, 51, 52 and 70 are identical. The draft yoke 22 is connected by a universal hitch to a traction means and comprises two diverging goose neck arms 40, 41 secured to a torque tube 43 that extends lateral beyond the arms 41 to be rigidly secured to arms 44 pivotally connected at 44f to the sides of the bowl. At the centre of the torque tube 43 there is pivotally mounted three single-acting hydraulically-actuated piston-cylinder units 50, 51, 52 which act on levers 56, 57, 58 pivoted about a rod 60 transversely secured to the yoke. The arms 56, 58 are each connected by a lost motion connection to a rod 62 pivotally connected to one side or the other of the bowl which is thus raised or lowered on actuation of the units 50, 52. On the arm 57 is mounted a pulley 64 about which passes a cable 65 that is dead end to 66 on the apron and on the yoke at 67. Thus the movement of the apron is controlled by unit 52 and because of the pulley 64 and cable 67, the apron is moved at twice the speed for twice the distance for unit movement of the unit 52 as compared with movement of the bowl for unit movement of the units 50. 52. The mechanism actuating the ejector is designed to give it an acceleration over approximately the entire distance from the retracted position to dumping position, the unit 70 moving at a constant rate. The cylinder of the unit is pivotally mounted on the bowl frame. and the piston is pivotally connected to an arm 72 that can rotate about the pivot 72a on the bowl and has a roller 73 moving over a wear plate 74 on the ejector to move same on actuation of the unit to give the motion referred to above. When in the dumping position, the ejector is approximately balanced over its pivotal connection 34a with the bowl and is urged to return by a spring 76 so connected to the ejector and the bowl that it is only tensioned during the last portion of the motion of the ejector to the dumping position. The parts are so positioned as to give to the operator, positioned on the traction means, the maximum visibility of the bowl during all the working operations.
