Class 79(3) [Also in Groups XXV and XXXVII] In a vehicle locking device comprising a gear shift lever, the shaft of which extends parallel to the steering column housing the steering shaft, a housing surrounding the gear shift shaft and the steering column and being formed by two parts hinged together at one edge parallel to the shafts and capable of being clamped together at the other edge, and a lock mounted in one housing part and provided with a bolt movable into a recess in the gear shift shaft to lock same, the housing parts are formed with separate recesses for the gear shift shaft and the column and the housing parts are clamped together by screws, the parts being formed with a projection and a recess respectively where the screws bridge the parts to preclude direct access thereto. As shown the housing comprises the parts 11, 12 pivoted together at 13 and held together by screws 16 (see Group XXV) to embrace the steering column 1 and a tube 2 enclosing the shaft 3 operated by the gear shift lever (not shown). One part 12 carries a key operated lock 4, which in its operative position causes a detent 8 to pass through a hole 10 in the tube 2 and enter the recess 9 in the shaft 3 to lock the latter in an " in gear ". position, preferably reverse gear. The lock 4, when operative, renders inoperative a switch 21 controlling the vehicle ignition and controlled by a lever 24 (see Group XXXV). The screws 16 may be of the type formed with double heads, one head being polygonal and being removed after positioning and the other head being flat and cylindrical, the two heads being connected by a weak portion. The housing part 12 is formed with the projection 18 co-operating with the recess 17 in the part 11 where the screws pass between the parts.
