Abstract

713,243. Microscopes. SARTORY, P. K:, and SARTORY INSTRUMENTS, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 28794/49. Class 97(1) In a stereoscopic binocular microscope the beam from the objective is geometrically divided and completely inverted so as to yield two beams producing erect images, each beam thereafter passing through a corresponding reflecting system, such as rhomboid prism, from which it emerges in a direction parallel to its incident direction to reach an eyepiece. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the beam from the objective 10 is divided by two Dove prisms 11 in contact along a line 11 b which invert each of the beams in one direction. Each beam is then reflected by a mirror 12, inverting in a perpendicular direction and after two reflections in a rhomboid prism 13 reaches the eyepiece 17. The prisms 13 are each rotatable about the axis of the beam incident thereon to allow interocular adjustment, and the portion of the system within the dotted circle of Fig. 1 may be rotatable about the axis of the objective 10. As shown in Fig. 4 the Dove prisms 11 are mounted in a holder 38 fitting, within a tubular member 33 having a cradle 36 to which is screwed a housing 37 bearing the mirror 12. Secured to the housing 37 is a plate 43 rotatably bearing two collars 45 each supporting a a rhomboid prism 13 and an eyepiece tube 47 rotatable about the axis of the collar 45 for interocular adjustment. The tubular member 33 fits into the body tube of the microscope and is located by the engagement of an adjustable screw thereon with .a groove 34, this arrangement permitting the member 33 and the system carried thereby to be rotated about the axis of the objective. The Dove prism holder 38, Fig. 9, comprises two part cylindrical members 39 connected by a web 40 and retaining members 41. The web is wedge-shaped at such an angle that the basis of the prisms, when located against the web, are at the correct angle. The prisms may be cemented to the members 41. Alternatively the web may be replaced by racks or by two transverse members locating the prisms. Holes 42 are provided for engagement by a tool to rotate the prisms relative to the mirror 12, when located in the tubular member 33, to adjust the prisms to the correct position.
