Abstract

Derivatives of imidazole are obtained by the condensation of an ortho-diamine of an aromatic or heterocyclic ring with an aldehyde or its acetal or bisulphite, followed by ring-closing with dehydrogenation with an aromatic nitro-compound, with or without isolating the intermediate Schiff's base. In examples, o-phenylene diamine is condensed with benzaldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, furfurol, vanillin, and 1 : 3 - dimethyl - 4 : 5 - diaminouracil and o-aminodiphenylamine are condensed with benzaldehyde, and the products are ring-closed with the aid of nitrobenzene, to give 2-phenyl - benzimidazole, 2 - isopropylbenzimidazole, 2 - furyl - benzimidazole, 2 - (41-oxy - 31 - methoxy - phenyl) - benzimidazole, 8 - phenyl - theophylline, and 1 : 2 - diphenyl-benzimidazole respectively.
