713,089. Coating with metals. HOWLETT, J. W., DEW, S. B., and WELLWORTHY PISTON RINGS, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1952 (Aug 17, 1951], No. 19427/51. Class 82 (2) [Also in Groups XXII and XXVI] In a method of making a composite stator blade for a gas turbine or compressor, a blade is embedded at the root end in a footing of aluminium or aluminium alloy by providing on it an inner coating of an alloy of aluminium and the metal of the blade and an outer coating of aluminium and then casting the footing metal around it. The root 10' of the blade 10 is immersed in a bath of molten aluminium until it reaches the temperature at which alloying action takes place between the aluminium and the metal of the blade. whereupon it is removed and quenched to below the said alloying temperature. This provides a composite coating 12, an inner coating of the alloy and an outer coating of aluminium. The root 10' is then heated until the outer aluminium coating is plastic placed in a mould, preferably projecting upwardly through the bottom of the mould and the aluminium or aluminium alloy is cast around it.
