Abstract

<PICT:0713029/III/1> Soaps and soapstocks are bleached by continuously feeding a hypochlorite bleaching agent into a stream of molten soap or soapstock and ensuring rapid and intimate mixing of the bleaching agent with the soap or soapstock. The soaps &c., specified comprise those made mainly from highly coloured oils such as red palm oil and green tallow soaps, groundnut oil soapstock containing the soap mixed with neutral oil, and palm oil soapstock. The bleaching agent is preferably sodium hypochlorite and includes substances such as chlorine which will form a hypochlorite in situ when a caustic alkali is present. A bleaching aid may also be used and may be fed either into the intimate mixture of the soap and bleaching agent or into the stream of molten soap. The bleaching aids specified comprise per-salts such as sodium persulphate or sodium percarbonate, peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, ammonia, ammonium salts or urea. The process may be carried out under pressure, usually not exceeding 5 atmospheres. A preferred temperature is 75 DEG to 85 DEG C., but temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C. may be used by operating under pressure and using steam. In the case of soapstocks, saponifying and bleaching in one operation may be effected by bleaching in the presence of an alkaline substance. The process should be carried out under alkaline conditions by adding alkali so that the pH does not fall below the desired value as the reaction proceeds. In a suitable apparatus for the process, water, bleaching agent, bleaching aid and molten soap or soapstock are fed at the bottom of a tubular vessel 8 through pipes 1, 2 3 and 4 respectively. The liquids are agitated by an agitator 10 having three blades preferably close to the outlets of the feeding pipes, with additional stirrers at other levels if desired, operated by a motor 11 through a shaft 12. A heating or cooling jacket 9 may be provided. The outlet 7 for the bleached soap is provided in the upper part of the vessel. Detailed examples of the process are given, in some of which a subsequent treatment with sodium hydrosulphite is used.
