Abstract
A relatively safe method for the large scale preparation of hazardous chemical compositions, such as a concentrated solution of chlorine dioxide in water, comprises supplying relatively concentrated liquid starting materials each from a respective source to a reaction chamber (1) through a respective inlet (3, 4) at a predetermined rate. The starting materials are intermixed in a plurality of intercommunicating, preferably annular, passageways (8) within the chamber (1) to form a liquid reaction product comprising a hazardous gas dissolved in a liquid. The reaction chamber (1) has means (9), preferably a pH measurement electrode, to sense the concentration of the reaction product within the chamber (1) and means to supply a liquid diluent for the product whenever the concentration of the product exceeds a predetermined hazardous value. The product leaves the chamber (1) through an outlet (7) which may be connected to a dilution chamber (2). <IMAGE>
