Abstract

712.349. Frequency modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1952 [Feb. 20. 1952], No. 4531/52. Class.40 (5). [Also in Group XXXV] In a frequency modulating circuit in which a high-Q resonator X is coupled through a quarter-wave line Q to an oscillator G and modulator B, as in Specification 618,967, two voltages in phase opposition from one end of the line 1 are combined with voltage from the other end of the line 3 in a difference detector DD, the modulator B being controlled by a differential circuit DA to which are applied the modulating signals at M1 and the output from the difference detector. At the mid-frequency, the output from terminal 3 is very small and the difference detector is arranged to produce zero output. During modulation a linearizing voltage of correct amplitude and sign is produced and applied to modify the modulating signal voltage. At the same time the centre frequency is automatically stabilized, if drift occurs. The out-of-phase voltages from point 1 are produced at the ends of a half-wave line Q2. Amplitude modulation is removed by a feed-back circuit comprising an amplitude detector D and low pass filter LPF controlling the amplitude of the output of oscillator G.
