Abstract
In the Oxo synthesis from olefins, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen, the catalyst contains cobalt sulphate to which a free acid is added to impart an acid reaction. The pH of the catalyst is preferably 1-3. Products of low metal content are obtained. A suitable catalyst contains cobalt sulphate supported on magnesia-magnesium chloride (magnesium oxychloride) to which free acid has been added. The ratio of MgO to MgCl2 is preferably not greater than 3 : 1. The catalyst is made by mixing cobalt sulphate, magnesia and hydrochloric acid as a thin paste, moulding to shape, and drying at 105 DEG C. Other alkaline earth metal salts may replace the magnesium oxychloride, for example magnesium chloride or sulphate. Cobalt sulphate may be mixed with calcium sulphate and sulphuric acid to give a pH of 1-3. Alternatively, the catalyst may be used in aqueous solution containing, for example, 100-400 g./l. of CoSO4.7H2O acidified with nitric acid to a pH of 1-3. Generally 50-2000 c.c. of such a solution is used per 1. of hydrocarbon treated. Reaction temperatures are 120-220 DEG C. In examples: (1) a C9 olefinic mixture, and acidified CoSO4.7H2O, are treated with water gas at 138-140 DEG C. and 138-193 kg./sq. cm. to give aldehyde; (2) a slightly acid double salt CoSO4.MgSO4.14H2O is used as in (1); (3) a solution of CoSO4.7H2O is mixed with a synthetic C10 olefinic fraction, adjusted to a pH of 2.5 with nitric acid, and treated with water gas; (4) a fraction from cracked petroleum wax averaging C7 is similarly treated using an acidified solution of cobalt and magnesium sulphates; (5) a turpentine oil cut freed of diolefinic constituents is reacted using an acidified solution of cobalt sulphate as catalyst yielding mainly terpene aldehydes. Specification 631,316 is referred to.ALSO:An Oxo synthesis catalyst contains cobalt sulphate to which a free acid is added to impart an acid reaction. The pH of the catalyst is preferably 1-3.
