Abstract

711,508. Grinding valve seats. DEWRANCE & CO., Ltd. Nov 20, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1951], No. 27522/51. Addition to 653,828. Class 60 The valve-seat grinding machine of the parent Specification has one or more of the following modifications:- (a) the driving pulley 101 is moved eccentrically and in unison with the eccentric movement of the rod 5, (b) the abutment member 6 is held against the valve seat 3 by a biassed support 50 to which it is hingedly connected, (c) a spindle 110 secured to the abutment member 6 extends through and beyond an aperture 108 in the valve body 4, and (d) a rotatable annular feed part 11 is disposed between the rotatable member 14 and the abutment member 6 and is in screw-threaded engagement with the latter. The rod 5 is mounted on anti-friction bearings 33 and 35 on the rotatable member 14 and is driven by a belt 29 from the pulley 101 which is driven by a flexible shaft 102 from an electric motor 103 and mounted eccentrically in a bushing 87, the latter member being in the same relative position to the pulley as the member 14 is to the rod 5. Eccentric motion is imparted to the latter by a handle 93 connected to the bushing 87 which is in turn connected to the rotatable member 14 by two sprocket wheels 91, 25 and a chain drive 26. A second chain drive, operated by a star wheel 106, rotates the part 11 which, through a thrust bearing 18, imparts axial feed to the member 14 and the rod. The member 6 is pressed against the seat 3 with a force many hundreds of times larger than that between the rod and seat 2 by rotation of a nut 74 which causes downward axial displacement of a rod 71 acting through pivoted links 63, 67 on the member 50 and a pivoted member 70 bearing against the valve body. Pins 82 and 53 may be selectively engaged with sets of holes in the member 50 and a telescopic fitting 69 in the end of the member 70 to enable the link system to be adjusted, while a screw 55 provides additional adjustment of the member 50. The spindle 110, secured to the member 6 by a bracket 109, has a nut 114 which is tightened to engage a plate 111 secured by T-bolts 112 to a flange on the valve body. The nut 114 or the bolt 55 can be used to bring the grinding head into the desired relationship with the valve body. The machine may be used for lapping by the substitution of an appropriate tool which is rotated manually by a handle connected to the pulley 110.
