Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a blend of mineral oil having a viscosity index between 30 and 110 and a viscosity between about 3,000 and 45,000 S.S.U. at -30 DEG F., and from one-third to 3 times the volume of mineral oil of an ether or ether-ester of polypropylene glycol wherein at least one ether group is derived from a monohydric alcohol of at least 5 carbon atoms, said polymeric material having a viscosity index not lower than about 125 and a viscosity between about 5,000 and 40,000 S.S.U. at -30 DEG F. The viscosity of the blend is less than would be expected from a mixture of the components and is less than 20,000 S.S.U. at -30 DEG F. The mineral oil has a maximum pour point of about -50 DEG F. and preferably a 5 to 95 per cent. boiling range not exceeding 100 DEG F. The polymeric material, which comprises preferably from 40 to 60 per cent. of the total blend, has an average molecular weight of 400 to 600 and a pour point below -50 DEG F. It may be a mono ether of polypropylene glycol, or such mono ether may be further etherified or esterified. The mono ether is prepared by condensing 1.2 propylene oxide with an alcohol of at least 5 carbon atoms, and examples of such alcohols are given. The mono ether thus produced may be etherified with diethyl sulphate, diazo-methane, ethyl chloride, thallous ethylate or an alkyl halide, or esterified to give an ether-ester with an aliphatic acid having 2 to 12 carbon atoms. Substances which may be incorporated into the blends include detergents, such as metal phenates, sulphurized metal phenates, metal salts of alkyl phenol sulphides and polysulphides, metal sulphonates, metal phosphates and phosphonates, metal mercaptides and metal carboxylates; corrosion and oxidation inhibitors such as organic sulphides and polysulphides, selenides and polyselenides, metal dithiocarbamates, salts and esters of organic thiophosphoric acids and N. phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine; viscosity index improving agents such as the polymeric esters of methacrylic acid; defoaming agents such as methyl silicones; and metal deactivators such as alizarin or quinizarin.
