Abstract
Porous dielectric insulations of organic thermoplastic substances are prepared by exposing conductors covered with a shape-resistant thermo-plastic substance to the action of liquid mixtures consisting of solvents for the thermoplastic substance and liquids which only swell or do not dissolve the thermoplastic substance, at least one of the components of the liquid mixtures having a boiling point lower than the softening point of the thermoplastic substance and then heating to above the softening point. Specified thermoplastic substances are polystyrene, polyethylene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl ethers, polymethacrylic compounds, polyvinyl esters of organic acids, polyamides and polyurethanes. Specified polystyrene solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene and methylene chloride and specified non-solvents are pentane, heptane, hexane and petroleum ether. It is preferred that the liquid mixture contains more than 30 per cent. of the non-solvent liquid. The heating may be effected by means of infra-red radiations, steam, hot air or hot water.
