Class 5 (1) A potato &c. is sliced by sliding it by hand over a guide plate a against the edge c' of a blade c which is located in selected slots b<SP>2</SP>, b<SP>3</SP> to give various slice thicknesses and the slots being stepped to vary the horizontal distance between the edge c<SP>5</SP> of the plate a and the edge of the blade c. The slots b<SP>3</SP> are shorter than their corresponding slots b<SP>2</SP> to receive the reduced end c' of the blade c which is held in position by a split ring d in a hole c<SP>4</SP>. To make chips the slices may then be pushed transversely against the blade.
