Abstract

Filaments of non-circular cross-section, and yarn consisting of or containing such filaments, which filaments have a shape factor (see below) of at least 1.4, are produced by melt-spinning a synthetic linear polymer having a relative viscosity (see below) of at least 33, under an inert atmosphere, through a spinneret having slot-shaped orifices into a cooling fluid, the filaments or yarn being subsequently cold drawn. The "shape factor" is the projection of the cross-section of the filament on a straight line oriented so that the projection is a maximum divided by the projection of the cross-section on a straight line at right angles to the former straight line. The polymers may be polyanhydrides, polyureas, polyurethanes, polyethers or, preferably, polyamides, e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide. The "relative viscosity" of a polymer is the ratio of the viscosity of a solution thereof in 90 per cent. by weight formic acid containing 11 grams of polymer per 100 c.c. of solution at 25 DEG C. to the viscosity of 90 per cent. by weight formic acid at the same temperature. The inert atmosphere under which the polymer is molten may be nitrogen, but is preferably steam. The cooling fluid is preferably air. The slotshaped orifice is defined as any aperture at least four times as long as it is wide. The aperture may be branched, e.g. cruciform. It may be rectangular, lentiform, luniform, reniform or, particularly, bone-shaped, i.e. waisted. The length of the orifice is measured by the straight line joining its most distant points, and the width by the projection of the orifice in a straight line at right angles to the aforesaid straight line. Examples are given of the spinning of polyhexamethylene adipamide under nitrogen from a spinneret containing 15 rectangular slots measuring 0.019 by 0.004 in., the spinning speeds ranging from 805-3,695 f.p.m., the relative viscosities from 33.5 to 47.4, the draw ratios from 3.4 to 4.4 and the shape factors from 1.4 to 2.0. In a specific example the spinning speed is 2,230 f.p.m., the relative viscosity is 44.6, the draw ratio is 4.1 and the shape factor is 2.0. Specification 533,304 is referred to.
