Abstract
710,031. Shaft furnaces. HARPER & CO., Ltd., J., and SMITH, E. April 16, 1953 [April 17, 1952], No. 9637/52. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXII] The inner refractory lining of a shaft furnace is replaced in the melting zone by a water-cooled cast iron cylinder 10 incorporating arcuate quadrants 11 formed with upper and lower headers 14 and 13 respectively, connected by closely spaced tubes 12, each quadrant being provided with an inlet water pipe 22 in the lower header 13 and two outlet water pipes 21 in the upper header 14. The space between the cylinder 10 and the furnace shell 23 is packed with refractory material and a thin layer of ganister or other refractory 24 is keyed on to the inner surface of the cylinder by helical or other ribs. Each quadrant is a composite assembly of steel headers and tubes located in a mould and cast into a cast iron block (see Group XXII).
