Abstract

709,960. Filing papers. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. Nov. 20, 1951, No. 27255/51. Class 146(1) A card filing tray comprises a box-like structure 1 having two or more compartments and separators 4 for spacing apart batches of cards, each separator 4 having a lug 5, 12, 12 on each of three sides, the fourth side having an L-shaped portion 10, 11 extending therefrom over a portion of its length, base and outer edges of opposing side walls of each compartment having slots 3, 2, 2 adapted to engage with the lugs 5, 12, 12 to maintain the separators 4 substantially perpendicular to the base, the proportions of the L-shaped portion in relation to the cards being such as to space the cards from the separator proper by an amount to allow insertion of a finger for card removal. The tray 1 is divided into compartments by fixed partition walls 31 and the side and partition walls have a folded over strip 32 secured thereto, the strip having a series of slots 2 spaced at the same intervals as the series of slots 3 in the base of each compartment. A batch of cards between separators will normally occupy several times the space between adjacent slots. The lugs 12 of the separators 4 are arranged so as not to extend through the slots 2 to the next compartment and are of half the depth of the slots 2 so that a slot between the compartments can be used from both sides, the bottom lug 5 being long enough to lie in the corresponding slot 3 whether the lugs 12 are in the bottom or top half of slots 2. To prevent accidental withdrawal, the lug 5 is provided with grooves 6, 7 to co-operate with the edge of a slot 3 at the two depths of insertion. The L-shaped portions 10, 11 may have an index clip on the top portions 10, formed by turned over edges 8, 9 between which an index label may be slid. The rear wall of each compartment may also have a similar L-shaped portion, and the L-shaped portions 10, 11 may be on the left as shown, or centrally placed. The tray is preferably supported at a slight angle to the vertical as shown, the support comprising front feet 24, 25 of metal with rubber pads 26, 27 screwed thereto, the metal strips being welded to the end.of the tray 1, and the opposite ends bent over and linked to straps 13, 14 by hinge pins. Clips 20 and 21 (not shown) are welded to the upper end of the tray and U-shaped back stay limbs 18, 19 are attached thereto by screws. The angle of the tray is adjusted by insertion of the strap members 13, 14 in appropriate holes 17 in the back stay where they are maintained by screws 15, 16.
