Abstract

709,646. Centrifugal separators. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. July 10, 1952 [July 12, 1951], No. 16600/51. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVI] Centrifugal oil separator means for use in engine breather arrangements-as shown, the breather arrangement of the wheel case for the drive of the auxiliaries of a gas turbine enginecomprises a casing which houses a rotatable member having a number of angularly spaced blades 23 carried by a hollow shaft 15, each vane being provided on its leading surface adjacent its tip with an oil-collecting channel 26 extending across the vane and parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotatable member, the latter having walls 21, 24 extending radially one on either side of the vanes from the shaft for a radial distance greater than the channels, and the arrangement being such that, in operation, the breather gases pass radially inwards between the vanes and the radially extending walls to the interior of the hollow shaft, and the oil collected by the channels is discharged into a space outside the normal path of the breather gases. The oil-separator casing consists of 'a cup-shaped part 10 and a ring-shaped part 11 bolted together into an aperture in the auxiliary drive casing 12. The shaft rotates in bearings 16, 17 carried by the parts 10 and 11 respectively, and is driven from the fuel pump shaft 20 through gears 19 and 18, the latter closing one end of shaft 15. The space between the walls 21, 24 communicates. outwardly through a series of apertures 13 formed circumferentially in part 10, and inwardly through apertures 25 formed in the shaft at the roots of the vanes. Wall 21 is formed integrally with the shaft and is connected to the vanes and wall 24 by rivets 22. The vanes have leading surfaces so curved that the tips trail angularly with respect to the roots. The oil collector channel in each vane is formed by a groove having a circumferentially-directed outer wall and an inner wall curved to merge smoothly into the leading surface of the vane. Oil from the channels flows through a ring of holes 27 formed in wall 21 and is discharged through a drain hole 28 in the casing 12. The purified gases pass through a gauze 30 covering the open end of the shaft.
