Abstract

A centrifugal separator for separating particulate contaminants from a contaminated gas stream comprises a housing (12) having an inlet (14) for the gas stream, an outlet (16) for the gas stream after it has been treated, and a drain (18) for collected contaminants. A rotor (20) is mounted within the housing. The rotor comprises a first rotor plate (32), a second rotor plate (36), adjacent to the first rotor plate, which is spaced apart from the first rotor plate along the rotation axis so that there is no axial overlap between the first rotor plate and the second rotor plate and a plurality of vanes (24) between the plates. Each vane has an inner end (26) at or towards the rotor axis and an outer end (28) towards the periphery of the rotor and the outer ends of the vanes are spaced around the periphery of the rotor. The inlet for the gas stream communicates with spaces between the vanes towards the axis of the rotor to enable the gas stream to flow outwardly between the vanes as the rotor rotates so that contaminants in the gas stream collect on the vanes for discharge through the drain.
