Abstract

709,315. Etching. DOW CHEMICAL CO Feb. 8, 1952 [Feb. 12,1951], No. 3428/52. Class 100 (2) An etching bath for etching an acid-soluble metal, e.g. in making a printing plate, comprises a mixture of a petroleum sulphate having from 18 to 30 carbon atoms, a liquid petroleum fraction boiling in the range 90‹ C. - 390‹ C., and an aqueous solution containing nitric acid. Preferably the nitric acid solution contains between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of HNO, by weight, the weight of the petroleum fraction being at least 1.3 times the weight of the petroleum sulphonate, but not more than 0.15 times the weight of the aqueous nitric acid solution. The petroleum sulphonates used may be the petroleum sulphonic acids and salts thereof, e.g. naphthenic soaps or mahogany soaps. The preferred sulphonates have 24-26 carbon atoms, the sodium salts having the empirical formula CxHySO 3 Na where y = 2x - 10. Examples of petroleum fractions used are gasoline, benzine, kerosene, coal oil, and lubricating oil. Inclusion of the petroleum sulphonate and petroleum fraction increases the ratio of the depth of the etch to the amount of lateral attack on the metal underlying the parts of the plate coated with a resist. The composition may be splashed against the plate.
