Abstract

709,191. Valves. ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., and FRASER, D. S. D. June 20, 1950 [June 20, 1949], No. 16383/49. Class 135 A valve comprises a casing 1, Fig. 1, with a flange 4 dividing it into two zones and having passages 32 communicating with the exterior of the casing, a ported sleeve 6 having a coned fit in the flange, movable valve members 11, 12 for controlling ports 7 in the sleeve and movable by nuts 14, 15 respectively engaged by left- and right-hand threads on an operating spindle 13, the nuts and valve members being non-rotatable. In the closed position, rings 27, Fig. 2, on the valve members engage rings 28 on the sleeve. The nuts 14, 15 are retained in recesses in the valve members by rings 17, 19 respectively, permitting a slight amount of relative movement, so that when the spindle is rotated to open the valve, the nuts move first to disengage seatings 43 whereby fluid is admitted to a space 29 between the members to balance them. This space communicates with the passages 32, one of which is fitted with a cock 34 and the rest with plugs 33. Thrust races 38, 39 for the spindles are mounted in a housing 40 capable of slight movement relative to casing 1 so that the valve members may seat with equal pressure. An extension 22 of nut 15 engages the lower end of the housing 40 in the full open position of the valve. An indicator 46 geared to the spindle hand-wheel 42 shows the position of the valve members. The cock 34 may be left open to indicate flow through the valve, used for draining the space 29 when the valve is closed, or used to test for leakage past one or other of the members. The sleeve, including the stem and valve members, is removable as a unit and jacking screws may be provided in a flange 9 on the sleeve to engage a flange 9a on the casing for disengaging the sleeve 6 from the flange 4. According to the Provisional Specification, short sleeves are attached to opposite sides of the flange, the valve members seat directly on the flange and passages through the members are controlled by seatings on the nuts. Hinged flap valves control communication between the passages and the space 29 between the members.
