Abstract

709,163. Coating with metals; fluxes. WHITFIELD & SHESHUNOFF, Inc. May 29,1952, No. 13714/52. Class 82 (2) A metal article is coated with metal by having the coating applied and then of molten inert material serving to cool the coating and to support it against disturbing gravitational influences while being passed through a bath it is solidifying. The apparatus may comprise a bath for coating metal and a bath for the inert material, the baths-having a common wall in which or adjacent to which is a sizing die through which the article to be coated is passed. The inert bath may be disposed within the coating bath and have the sizing device in the bottom of the inert bath. Sizing rolls may be employed in the place of the sizing die. The inert material should have a specific gravity similar to that of the coating material which may be: zinc, zinc alloys, aluminium, aluminium alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, lead, tin or terne. If desired the respective liquid levels of the coating and inert materials may be arranged to give a positive metal pressure at the sizing orifice, but compressed air pressure may be used. The coating bath 2 receives the wire 5 to be coated and the latter then passes through the die 7 into the inert material 4. The temperature of the inert material is controlled by heating or cooling coils 9. Fig 3 shows a modified apparatus in which the inert bath 23 is arranged in the coating metal bath 22. The inert bath may comprise: for coating with aluminium, molten sulphur, or a fused mixture of cryolite and alumina, or aluminium fluoride and barium fluoride: for coating with zinc: zinc chloride with either lead oxide or tungsten oxide. Specification 453,803 is referred to.
