Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises (1) a resinous polymer of 2, 3-dichlorobutadiene-1, 3 or a copolymer thereof containing at least 60 per cent. 2, 3-dichlorobutadiene-1, 3, (2) a bodying resin comprising (a) neoprene, polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride or (b) rubber, balata, gutta percha, Chilte gum, polybutadiene, polyisoprene or a butadiene-styrene copolymer, all the resins under (a) being chlorinated and all under (b) being chlorinated, hydrochlorinated or chlorinated-hydrochlorinated, and (3) an organic solvent. It is preferred that crude 2, 3-dichlorobutadiene-1, 3 is used since this contains minor proportions of such compounds as 1, 2-dichlorobutadiene-1, 3 and the chlorovinyl acetylenes which copolymerize therewith to form the basic resin. Specified copolymeriz-, able monomers are vinyl chloride, fluoride bromide, acetate, propionate, benzoate and alkyl sulphones, vinyl ethyl ether, vinyl ethyl sulphide, vinyl b -chloro-ethyl ether, vinyl phenyl ether, vinyl ethyl ketone, vinyl phenyl ketone, styrene, a -methyl styrene, nuclearly chlorinated styrene, vinyl carbazole, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl chloroacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrolein, vinylidene chloride or bromide, 1-fluoro-1-chloro-ethylene, coumarone, indene, 4-methylene-1, 3-dioxolane, butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene, 2-3-dimethyl butadiene-1, 3, piperylene and divinyl ketone. Specified solvents are carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, orthodichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene dichloride, hexane, cyclohexane, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and ethyl acetate. Petronizing agents such as thiourea, di-o-tolylthiourea, hexamethylenetetramine, diphenylguanidine, di-o-tolylguanidine, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and zinc butylxanthate as well as non-reinforcing carbon black may also be present. The composition may be in the form of a broken-down gel, said gel having been formed by heating the composition to above 60 DEG C., to dissolve the mass and then cooling with vigorous agitation.ALSO:An adhesive composition comprises (1) a resinous polymer of 2, 3-dichlorobutadiene- 1, 3 or a copolymer thereof containing at least 60 per cent. 2-3-dichlorobutadiene- 1, 3, (2) a bodying resin, comprising rubber, balata, gutta percha, Chilte gum, neoprene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene or a butadiene-styrene copolymer which has been chlorinated, hydrochlorinated or chlorinated-hydrochlorinated and (3) an organic solvent. Specified solvents are carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, a dichlorbenzene, chlorobenzene, benzene, toluene, xylane, ethylene dichloride, hexane, cyclo-hexane, acetone, methylethylketone and ethyl acetate. Petronizing agents such as thiourea, di-o-tolythiourea, hexamethylenetetramine, diphenylbuanidine, di-o-tolyl guanidine, 2-mercapto-benzothiazole and zinc butyl xanthate as well as non-reinforcing carbon black may also be present. The composition may be in the form of a broken-down gel, said gel having been formed by heating the composition to above 60 DEG C. to dissolve the mass and then cooling with vigorous agitation. The adhesive composition may be employed in the production of adhered structures in which the substrate is metal and the superstrate is an elastomer, e.g. rubber, a butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, polychloroprene, lactoprene, polyisoprene, butyl rubber or polybutadiene.
