Abstract

<PICT:0708800/IV (a)/1> In the manufacture of tubular films from a normally crystalline vinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer thereof by extruding the molten polymer in tubular form from a die 10 downwardly into a cooling bath 12 in which the tube is supercooled, constricted by rolls 13 and filled with a lubricating liquid 14 to a level near that of the bath, whereafter the film is stretched and oriented by inflation with air between the pairs of pinch rolls 16 and 17, the tendency of the opposed internal faces of the flattened tube to adhere to each other is obviated by introducing, continuously and at a uniform rate, a finely-divided solid anti-sticking agent suspended in a gas stream, e.g., air, into the space between the die and the surface of the lubricating liquid in the hot tube while venting continuously the suspending agent. As shown, the gaseous suspension is introduced through tube 21 and the gas vented through tube 20. A baffle plate 22 deflects the powdered solid against the internal walls of the nearly molten tubular film. Specified anti-sticking agents are finely ground polyvinylidene chloride, micropulverised mica or starch, zinc stearate and talc. Specifications 656,735 and 664,638 are referred to.
