Abstract
769,129. Casting-processes; drawing. FROMSON, H. A. March 8, 1955, No. 6732/55. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups V and XXIII] Sheet-material of e.g. metal, plastic or glass, is cast in the horizontal interface between two bodies of liquid which are immiscible with each other and the material being cast, and which are at a temperature high enough to allow the material to spread into a horizontal layer while still in the liquid state, the mould-liquids being of low volatility at the casting temperature, and one having a lower S.G., and the other a higher S.G., than the material being cast. The mould-liquids may be molten inorganic salts, or salt mixtures, oxides, metals or mixtures of metals, and numerous examples are quoted. In a continuous process, the molten-material to be cast is introduced between mould-liquids 9, 11 through a conduit 2, the flow being regulated by a gate 3. The mould-liquids near the entrance are heated by gas-flames from a conduit 6, and are cooled near the exit by coolant from a conduit 7, so that a solidified sheet is withdrawn by rolls 5 through a die 4 which effects a slight reduction in the thickness of the sheet to maintain a seal against leakage of the mould liquids. The mould may be cooled by a circulating coolant such as steam. In a non-continuous process, a predetermined volume or weight of material to be cast is introduced into the mould, as by pouring into the surface of the lighter of the two mould-liquids, the material positioning itself under the influence of gravity between the two mouldliquids, and sheets of any desired perimeter may be produced. In a specific example, stainless steel at a temperature of 2900 F. is introduced between lead, and barium chloride at a temperature of 2600 F., the mould is cooled to 1800 F., and the stainless steel sheet removed.
