Abstract
2 - Dichloracetamido - 1 - p - nitrophenylpropane-1 : 3-diol is produced by condensing p-nitrobenzaldehyde with dichloracetamidoacetaldehyde in presence of a basic condensing agent to produce an aldol reaction product, and reducing the product by known methods. The product of the condensation according to the example 2 - dichloracetamido - 3 - p - nitro-phenyl - 3 - hydroxypropane - 1 - al is used directly for reduction by an oxidizable aluminium alkoxide, or an alkali metal borohydride preferably in a solvent. The product is a mixture of about 1 : 2 parts of the DL-threo and the DL-erythro forms, which is separated into components by known methods. Diethyl dichloracetamidoacetal is obtained by the action of methyl dichloracetate on diethylaminoacetal, and is converted into the corresponding aldehyde used as above by the action of hydrochloric acid followed by alkali.
