Abstract

708,660. Disintegrating vegetable materials for paper pulp &c. GAUNT, J. G. (Louisiana State University & Agricultural & Mechanical College. Board of Supervisors of). Sept. 5, 1951, No. 21019/51. Class 96 Sugar cane or sorgho bagasse, bamboo, reeds or maize stalks &c. are fed at 12 to "hammers" 20 loosely pivoted, or firmly held on bolts 23 passing through circular plates 22 on a shaft 16 rotated by a pulley 19 &c. at, e.g. 9,000 ft. per min. at the tips of the hammers, some hammers 20a being inclined as illustrated, to move the fibre towards a partition 13 whilst dragging it repeatedly over a semi-cylindrical screen 24, which separates out the pith, and repeatedly projecting it into a mixing-space above the hammers 20; Whereafter it is impacted by a beater 21 also on the shaft 16 and is discharged at 15. During the treatment, water-jets 26 at the end of the casing 10 and others (not shown) along the side of the casing are directed into the mixing-space.
