Class 86 [Also in Group XIII] An ice-cream freezer comprises a can 4 and agitating paddle 23 relatively rotatable, the paddle being given two additional oscillatory motions about axes at right angle to each other by an arm 15 bent in such a manner that the relatively movable parts of the drive are located outside the upper opening of the can, so that oil &c. cannot drop into the ice-cream. As shown, the can 4 is rotated within a fixed refrigerating receptacle 4a by gearing 3 which also drives two cams 9, 10. The cam 9 through a lever 5 rocks a tube 14 in which takes the downwardly bent end of the arm 15 so that the arm and the paddle 23 fixed thereto. are rocked through about 30 degrees on horizontal bearings 7, 8. The cam 10 through a lever 6 pivoted on the bearing 7 simultaneously swings the arm 15 about its bearing in the tube 14 so that the paddle has combined tilting and swinging oscillating motions within the rotating can. The arm 15 is bent in the form of an S and has a downwardly projecting pin 16 engaging a groove in the paddle relative rotation being prevented by a pin 26. The vertical edge and the bottom.of the paddle are provided with edges of plastic the vertical edge being slightly curved so as to contact the cam at one point with a rolling motion. A handle 24 is provided for removal of the paddle from the pin 16. To prevent bending. or fracture of the parts by lumps of ice the connection between the lever 6 and the arm 15 is yieldable against a spring in a tube 18. The can may be stationary and the paddle rotated in addition to its other movements.
