Abstract
707,697. Blast furnaces. OESTERREICHISCHALPINE MONTANGES. April 29, 1952, No. 10778/52. Class 51 (2) The hearth bottom of a blast furnace is cooled by a water space which is formed between the bottom of the furnace and its foundation. As shown the furnace 1 rests on a grid of I-girders 2 which in its turn rests on a foundation 3. An annular wall 5 forms a water trough 6 around the furnace the spaces 7 between the girders being in communication with this trough such that they are completely filled with water. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ends of the spaces 7 are enclosed by brickwork 10 and each space is so connected to its neighbour that cooling water fed into the spaces 9a, 9b by pipes 11 and 12 respectively are caused to longitudinally traverse the spaces in series until it is discharged from' the spaces 9c, 9d by respective pipes 14, 15. Each of these enclosed spaces is provided at each end with a normally plugged pipe 16 which is used when draining and cleaning becomes necessary.
